This park honors the first American to actually visit the Valley - Capt. John C. Fremont. Following his 1844 expedition American use of the Spanish Trail increased significantly. In his report and map, Fremont named the "Spanish Trail" and identified the Great Basin, just in time for the great migration of Americans lured west during the Gold Rush of 1849.
